The original design for the “Remember” World
Peace Memorial incorporated
symbols, quotations, and faces sandblasted into the facets of the “Shield
of David”
to accompany the inscription of the Psalms beneath each of six, monumental bronze
sculptures. The artist decided that—although the symbols, quotations, and
faces added
historical depth and enhanced the human dimensions of the design—the sheer
amount
of text and images diminished their impact and visually, detracted from the unity
and
coherence of the overall design. The deleted information and images, it was thought,
might be communicated, more effectively, in brochures, books, video media, and
on
a “Remember” website accessible to visitors, scholars, students and
teachers in
schools and universities, and people of all faiths around the world.
